Accessibility statement
We want everyone to be able to use this website, however they browse.
Our standard
We aim for this website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. We check pages with automated accessibility testing as we build and update the site, and we fix what we find.
Settings you can change
Every page has an Accessibility button at the top right, with a person icon. On a phone or tablet it sits next to the Menu button, and the menu also has an Accessibility settings button. Using a keyboard, press Tab from the top of the page until you reach it, then press Enter. The panel opens below the button. Press Escape, or choose Close, to close it and go back to where you were.
In the panel you can choose:
- Text size: standard, large or larger text. The whole page grows, and nothing scrolls sideways.
- Movement and animation: on or off. With animation off, every page shows the same content without movement. The page reloads when you change this.
- High contrast: dark ink text on a plain white background. Coloured backgrounds are removed, borders are darker, links are bold and underlined, and faded text is shown at full strength.
- Underline all links: every link is underlined, including menus and cards.
- Readable font: all text changes to Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed by the Braille Institute to be easier to read for people with low vision.
- Line spacing: more space between lines of text and between paragraphs.
- Reset all: puts every setting back to the standard view.
Each setting is a button that says whether it is on or off, so screen readers announce it. You can use any mix of settings at the same time. The panel also links to our Easy Read pages, information in your language and how to ask for another format.
Your choices are remembered on this device and browser only. We do not send them to anyone. If your device is already set to reduce motion, animation stays off. Your browser and device settings, such as zoom, also work on this site.
What we have built in
- Every page starts with a link to skip straight to the main content, and works with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline.
- Pages reflow on small screens and when text is enlarged, without scrolling sideways.
- Text and colours are chosen for strong contrast, and colour is never the only way we show something.
- Headings are in order, so screen reader users can move around a page easily.
- Images have text descriptions, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Forms have visible labels, mark the optional fields, explain errors in words and have no time limits.
- Nothing on this site plays sound or flashes.
- All content can be read with animation turned off.
Easy Read and other formats
Our Easy Read pages explain our services and how to make a complaint using short sentences and pictures.
If you would like information in another format, such as large print, a printed copy or in your language, please ask us. Our information in your language page explains how to use an interpreter and where to find NDIS information in other languages, in Auslan and in Easy Read. For an interpreter, call TIS National on 131 450 and ask them to contact us. If you are deaf, or have a hearing or speech impairment, you can contact us through the National Relay Service.
